"We are increasingly members of a knowledge society. Therefore the free flow of knowledge is very important. From the researcher to the professional, from the knowledge institute to business and public sector and vice versa."

The Open Access movement is committed to free and efficient transfer of knowledge. The arrival of IT and the internet has provided new and innovative ways to share knowledge. The OA movement is following this development closely.

Universities of applied sciences, by their very nature, have a strong connection with the professions they are training for. Open Access enhances this connection and offers opportunities for a further extension of this essential flow of knowledge. I expect that the universities of applied sciences will contribute significantly to the development of Open Access both within and outside of the Netherlands.
